Understanding the Proper Storage of Avocados

Choose a ripe avocado and carefully remove the pit. Clean it gently, removing any fruit residue to prepare it for sprouting.

Insert toothpicks into the pit and balance it over a glass of water. Ensure the bottom half is submerged, as this is where roots will form.

Keep the glass in a warm, sunny location. Avocado pits need light and warmth to sprout, so a windowsill is ideal for quick growth.

Be patient! In 2–6 weeks, you’ll see roots growing from the bottom and a sprout emerging from the top. Refresh the water weekly.

Once the sprout is 6 inches tall, plant it in a pot with well-draining soil. Leave the top half of the pit exposed for proper growth.

Water your plant regularly but avoid overwatering. Avocado plants thrive in slightly moist soil, so let the top layer dry out between watering.

Keeping avocados in too warm or too humid conditions speeds up spoilage. Balanced storage at room temperature helps prevent brown spots and early decay.
