How to take mulberry tree cuttings

Select branches that are healthy, straight, and about the thickness of a pencil. Look for those with no damage or disease for the best chance of success.

Take cuttings in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. This is when the tree is dormant and cuttings root most effectively.

Cut 6-8 inch sections from the branch, making sure each has at least 3-4 nodes. Nodes are where roots and leaves will grow from the cutting.

Make a clean cut at the bottom of the cutting at an angle and remove any leaves near the base. This helps focus energy on root growth.

Dip the bottom of the cutting in rooting hormone powder. This encourages faster root development and increases the success rate of propagation.

Plant the cutting in moist, well-draining soil. Keep it upright and bury it deep enough to cover at least two nodes for stability and root growth.

Harvest mulberries when they’re fully ripe and deep purple. Gently shake the branches to collect the fruits and enjoy them fresh or in recipes.
